Our ‘Cross Country on Rail’ package takes you through some of the most scenic train rides in the world! Board the ‘Udarata Menike’, the dream train which carries you through Majestic mountain tops and Spectacular lush green tea fields. Get to the Northern Peninsula in the ‘Yaal Devi’ train which was continued after years of discontinuity as a result of the civil war.
Apart from the railway expeditions, you will also encounter wildlife when you will be taken on a game safari in the Yala National Park. Overall, the ‘Cross Country Expeditions on Rail’ will leave you with memories for long time!

Day 1: Colombo
Arrive at the Bandaranaike International Airport where you will be welcomed by our tour leader. Thereafter, you will be transferred to the hotel in Colombo. Based on your time of arrival, you can take a walk in the heart of Colombo where you can enjoy some street food and shopping on the go.

Day 2: Jaffna
Wake up early morning this day to board 'Yaal Devi', the train which will take you on an 8 hour journey to Jaffna. The train journey will start at 5:45 AM. The compartments will be Air-Conditioned and comfortable. The journey would provide splendid views till you reach the Nothern Peninsula. After arrival in Jaffna check in to your hotel. Visit the Nallur temple which is an iconic Hindu Kovil after lunch. You can walk in the streets of Jaffna in the evening to some amazing culinary dishes which includes the famous Jaffna Crab Curry.

Day 3: Delft Island
Want to see some wild horses? Visit the Delft Island, the only place in Sri Lanka where wild horses roam free. Getting to the Delft island will be on a ferry from Jaffna. The island it self is secluded from the rest of the peninsula hence most of its buildings have a colonial touch to it. You can take a tuk tuk to visit different places in the island which is a fun way to spend your day.

Day 4: Habarana
Leave Jaffna to Habarana after breakfast. We expect to arrive at Habarana after lunch. Check in to your hotel where you will rest for a while. Go on a village tour in a 'Bullock Cart' in the evening. You might not be able to think of a better way to explore a village other than this. Enjoy a super local village dinner after the safari. The food will have its flavours bursting in your mouth.

Day 5: Dambulla/Kandy
Check out from your hotel after breakfast. Visit the famous Sigiriya which is an ancient rock fortress built by King Kashyapa. This UNESCO world heritage site is commonly known as the 8th Wonder of the World. From ponds still working to date, to traces of his kingdom, Sigiriya takes you back in time. You can also wander in the gardens at the basement if you are too tired to climb. This tour will be fully guided. Leave to Kandy after the Sigiriya tour. Visit the Rail Museum of Sri Lanka where you can find the entire history of the rail network, laid in front of you. Check in to your hotel in Kandy followed by a visit to the temple of tooth. You will stay in Kandy this night.

Day 6: Nuwara Eliya
Board the train again for the second time which will take you to 'Little England', Nuwara Eliya. Check in to your hotel after which, you can take a walk along the scenic Gregory Lake where you can enjoy the cold breeze coming through the waters of the lake. There are food stalls installed beside the lake which prepares local food. You can also visit the market where you can find some exotic seasonal fruits grown in Nuwara Eliya. Passion fruits, pears, strawberries, avacado and custard apples are some of the favourites. Stay in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 7: Hortain Plains/Ella
Wake up early in the morning for a drive to Hortain Plains where you will go on a short trek in search of the World's End cliff. On the way, expect to see a variety of fauna and flora and occasionally some Sambar deer if you are lucky. Hortain Plains is a UNESCO world heritage site. After the trek, take the train to Ella. As in all of the other transfers, we will accompany you through this as well. The Nanu Oya (N'Eliya) to Ella stretch is one of the best train rides in the world. You can either rest, or take a walk in this small town. Stay in Ella this day.

Day 8: Yala
Wake up in the morning to climb the little Adam's peak. After a short trek through tea plantations and a climb of stairs, you will find yourself amidst beautiful mountains surrounding you. Don't forget to carry your cameras. Visit the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, another photo-worthy destination. Drive to Yala afterwards. Check in to your hotel where you will spend the rest of the day.

Day 9: Yala Safari/Mirissa
Wake up to the singing birds of Yala National Park. After breakfast, get picked up by a safari jeep for a half day tour in the national park. Yala National Park has the highest leopard concentration in the world. Apart from leopards, you'll also see elephants, crocodiles and a vast variety of birds. This is the best national park if you are after semi-arid wildlife. After the safari, drive to Mirissa later that day where you will check into your hotel.

Day 10: Mirissa/Galle
Drive to see the southern most point of Sri Lanka, Point Donra. Afterwards, come back to Mirissa where you will enjoy the beaches till lunch. Drive to Galle after lunch. You will be taken on a tour in the Galle Fort which is best explored on foot. See the tough infrastructure which stood unharmed by the impact of the boxing day tsunami in 2004. Built by the Portuguese and developed by the Dutch, the infrastructure still remains intact in most places. Stay in Galle.

Day 11: Colombo
Leave Galle in the morning. You can have a dip in the sea of Galle fort before you leave in the morning. You will board the train for your fourth and final train journey. This will be subject to availability as the train cannot be pre-booked. After reaching Colombo, enjoy our farewell lunch. You will be dropped at the Airport based on your flying time.
